Answers for care teams, hospital IT and patients. If your question is not covered here, please get in touch.
The questions care teams, hospital IT, data protection officers and patients ask us most often, answered in plain language.
OnkoPass is a digital companion for outpatient cancer therapy, built by JustHealth GmbH in Munich. It consists of two access points that work together in real time: a clinic portal for the care team and an app for patients. Hospitals license OnkoPass and provide it to their patients as part of their treatment. It supports structured therapy management between appointments, covering symptom capture, medication plans with cycle logic, lab results, appointments, prescription requests and task assignment within the team.
A patient portal governs access and communication, the hospital information system covers documentation and billing. OnkoPass coordinates the outpatient therapy pathway between appointments, which is where oral and outpatient systemic therapies actually happen. The functional difference is the coordinated processing of information along that pathway: symptom reports, lab values and medication are not only made available, they are structured, put in context and turned into tasks for the care team. OnkoPass therefore works alongside a patient portal and a hospital information system rather than replacing either of them.
The clinic portal brings all active patients into one overview and highlights what stands out. Care teams work with structured symptom assessments, lab results and documents in one place, medication plans that follow the therapy cycle, appointment overviews, interprofessional task assignment and a treatment history that documents itself. Anything unusual becomes visible, while the clinical interpretation and every treatment decision remain with the care team.
OnkoPass connects through open standards: FHIR R4 for modern interfaces, HL7 v2 for established hospital and laboratory systems, and ISiK profiles for German hospital environments. There are no proprietary interfaces, so your systems keep speaking the standards they already know, and the connection can grow step by step with your requirements. In practice, OnkoPass has already been connected to a German university hospital via FHIR, which keeps integration a standardized step rather than a major IT project.
The hospital is the controller within the meaning of the GDPR. JustHealth GmbH acts as a processor under Article 28 GDPR and processes clinical data only on the hospital’s documented instructions. Data sovereignty over clinical data stays with the hospital, backed by role-based access rights, traceable logging, pseudonymization for analyses and patient consent that can be withdrawn at any time.
JustHealth GmbH is certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and complies with the BSI Cloud Computing Compliance Criteria Catalogue (C5). OnkoPass is operated in Germany, and data is encrypted in transit and at rest according to the current state of the art. Certificates, security measures and compliance documents are available for review in our Trust Center.
No. OnkoPass is not a medical device under the EU Medical Device Regulation and carries no CE marking as a medical device. It does not produce a diagnosis, does not evaluate findings and does not recommend any therapy. What it does is structure information and make it visible in context, so the clinical interpretation and every treatment decision stay with the care team.
Yes, for electronic symptom monitoring as an approach. The evidence comes from independent research and not from a study of OnkoPass. Basch and colleagues reported a randomized trial conducted at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in JAMA in 2017, in which patients receiving chemotherapy reported their symptoms electronically. Median overall survival in that trial was 31.2 months in the intervention group compared with 26.0 months in the control group.
These figures describe the trial by Basch and colleagues. They are not results of OnkoPass, and no comparable effect is claimed for OnkoPass.
OnkoPass is developed together with German cancer centers. The partner hospitals named on this website are Tübingen University Hospital, Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich, Leipzig University Hospital and University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden. Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Hartkopf (Tübingen University Hospital) and Dr. med. Krischan Braitsch (Klinikum rechts der Isar, Munich) describe their own experience with OnkoPass on this site.
OnkoPass is provided to you by the hospital treating you. Hospitals license OnkoPass and make it available to their patients as part of their care, so it is not an app you buy yourself. And because OnkoPass is not a medical device, it is also not a digital health application (DiGA) that a doctor could prescribe. If you would like to use OnkoPass, the best first step is to ask your own care team about it.
The app keeps your outpatient therapy in one place: a medication plan that follows the cycle of your therapy with its intake and break days, structured questions about how you are doing, a way to report side effects and to upload lab reports, prescription requests, an overview of your appointments and reminders about what is coming up. You will also find information about your therapy written to be understood, which you can read at home in your own time. The app is there to support the conversation with your care team, not to replace it.
Your data is stored and processed in Germany, in line with the GDPR. Your hospital is responsible for it as the controller, and JustHealth GmbH processes it on the hospital’s behalf as a processor. Access is limited by role, activity is logged, and the consent you give can be withdrawn at any time.
No. OnkoPass does not assess your symptoms and gives no medical advice. What it gives you is a simple, structured way to report what you are experiencing, so that your care team sees it and decides what needs to happen and how quickly. In an emergency, always use the emergency contacts and numbers your hospital has given you.
The time between appointments is exactly what OnkoPass was built for. What you enter in the app reaches your care team in a structured form, so there is a defined way to be heard without waiting for the next appointment or sitting in a phone queue. And because your entries are recorded as they happen, your next appointment can start from a shared picture of the past weeks instead of from memory. For anything acute or urgent, please keep using the emergency contacts and numbers your hospital has given you.
